Naresuan I and II at New York Asian Film Festival

Brian of Asian Cinema -- While on the Road is back in New York, and has been forced by his Subway Cinema colleagues to watch screeners of Asian movies until his eyes bleed.

In his first posting in awhile he reveals that M.C. Chatrichalerm Yukol's historical epics Naresuan I and Naresuan II will both be shown at this year's New York Asian Film Festival, which runs from June 20 to July 6.

Thailand's submission for Best Foreign Language Oscar, the rip-roaring Naresuan II, also called King of Fire, made its North American premiere earlier this year at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, but Naresuan I, focusing on Naresuan's boyhood as a hostage of Pegu's king, has never been shown outside Thailand Asia (the films screened at last year's Pusan International Film Festival). It will really be something to see the two films back-to-back on the same day, if the programmers can work that bit of scheduling magic.

Naresuan III, meanwhile, is in production, and might possibly be released late this year.
